San Antonio bars gear up for Spurs NBA Draft watch parties tonight

The next step of the Spurs ongoing rebuild will be broadcast live tonight during the 2025 NBA Draft and area bars are expected to be packed with fans following along as the enjoy plenty of food and adult beverages.

At the Friendly Spot on South Alamo, for example, two huge LED screens will be tuned into both ABC and ESPN, which will broadcast the first round of the draft beginning at 7 p.m. The second round begins at 7 p.m. Thursday on ESPN.

The Friendly Spot was packed two years ago when the Spurs selected phenom Victor Wembanyama as the No. 1 overall pick. Owner and "chief friend" Jody Bailey Newman said she expects tonight's crowd to be just as pumped.

"We open for business at noon, so fans can come and get their table early," Newman said. "We'll have drink and food specials and a large rainbow slide, so parents can watch their kids and the draft at the same time.

Perhaps the biggest watch party will begin at 6 p.m. at Frost Plaza in La Cantera. There will be games, giveaways, live music and more, along with the draft itself, which will be broadcast on a 40-foot LED screen.

Other local watering holes hosting watch parties include Tandem San Antonio, the coffee, beer and wine bars on Riverside Drive and Atlee's Rally in St. Paul Square. Both will be offering happy hour drink specials throughout the evening. @SpursJesus is hosting a Spurs party from 6 to 9 p.m. at Porta Rossa on Broadway with drink specials, plus prizes, a market with vendors and more.

With picks No. 2 and 14 in the first round, the Spurs should again make some noise in the draft. They are widely expected to select Dylan Harper, the explosive point guard from Rutgers with the second selection. Harper is the son of former NBA champion Ron Harper. Experts are divided on which player the team will pick in the No. 14 spot, so that should keep things interesting.
